 Puhoi Village
Puhoi Pub & Paddle
A great little day out, combining a mixture of active adventure (kayaking) and passive relaxation (drinking beer). Discuss the kayaking options with Puhoi River Canoe Hire.
Get out of town!
- Cross the Harbour Bridge and head north on highway 1. Just north of Waiwera turn left (sign posted) to Puhoi. This little settlement claims to be NZs first Bohemian settlement and its traditional style pub is well known.
- Puhoi River Canoe Hire Ltd is on your right just before the township. They offer kayak hire (doubles and singles) and transport to and from either end of the river. Talk to them about what you want to do.
Travel Times
It is approximately 45 minutes drive to Puhoi where you can hire kayaks for the trip. The amount of time it will take you to kayak up the river to the pub and back depends on a number of variables, include the direction tide is flowing and how much beer you decide to consume. Allow a full day to complete this trip or save time and effort by only kayaking one direction.
Don’t forget
- To check the tides before you go. Aim to kayak up the river on an incoming tide and then catch the outgoing tide back to the sea. The reasons for this will become clearly obvious if you try to do the opposite.
- To book kayaks or canoes with Puhoi River Canoe Hire – this is a popular trip to do.
- To go to the toilet before you leave the pub – it is pretty hard to pee out of a kayak.
 Puhoi Pub
Accomodation
We are presuming that you won't be staying in Puhoi. But if you do get too drunk (or can't face getting back in the kayak) the Puhoi Pub does have rooms for rent.
Food and drink
The Puhoi Pub is a great place for lunch. Good hearty food and a few ales in the sun sounds pretty sweet.
Must Do!
Have a beer at the pub before heading back down the river. You'll deserve a refreshment after the hard work of paddling up river
The trip
This trip is pretty simple. Just get in your kayak and paddle down the river. Enjoy lunch and a cold beverage, and paddle back.
- Our suggestion would be to do the Full River Adventure. You will be dropped at Wenderholm Regional Park, provided with kayaks and instruction in paddling technique. Wenderholm has a nice beach and from here it is an easy 8 km paddle up the river, through mangrove forests, back to Puhoi. Have lunch at the pub and then kayak back to Wenderholm where you will be picked up and dropped back at your car. Alternatively if you feel like a shorter trip then arrange it so that you only have to paddle one direction.
- On the way back stop in Waiwera and check out the hot pools and slides. This is a very commercial place but is still fun – if you are into that sort of thing.
- Finally remember if you’re the driver, don’t drink.

One person has added a comment. 1. Puhoi Paddle was lots of fun, not much work! Jessica Lax (Michigan), Unregistered We went with Puhoi River Canoe hire. It was two hours and you’re kayaking the entire time, but it wasn’t much work because of the current. The water was really calm. It took you through a bunch of cool places like farmlands and mangroves. We saw some cool birds. It was really easy for the distance we covered.
