Dunedin and Otago

Home of New Zealand's first university, Dunedin remains a student town. Kick off your night with a Speights Brewery Tour, then find out why the Captain Cook tavern is legendary. Outside of the town centre, look for penguins and albatross, and the surprisingly spherical Moreaki Boulders.

Highlights

  • Speights Brewery Tour
  • Nightlife in the biggest student town in NZ
  • Penguins and Albatross

What to DO

What's there to do in Dunedin?

  • Do a tour of the Speights Brewery.
  • Walk around the University area and check out the famous Dunedin student flats.
  • Drive/walk the steepest street in NZ – Baldwin Street. Take a bike with you and see if you can beat the GOOT Challenge record (fastest time to ride to the top).
  • Head to the legendary Captain Cook pub for a Speights mate.
  • Drive around the famous Octagon.
  • Check out St Clairs beach.
  • Explore the Otago peninsular and look out for penguins and albatross’. The walk to the Chasm and Lover’s leap is good.

GO (further afield)

Moving on
North on highway 1.

  • The Moeraki Boulders are pretty cool and worth a photo stop/leg stretch.
  • There is little else to do between Dunedin and Christchurch so plan on spending more time in either place and just driving in between.

Heading South

  • See the Southland section - make sure you make time for the Catlins.

Definitely go to the Speights Brewery. Worth a visit! and make sure to go with someone who can play the piano if you want to drink for an extra amount of time

 5. Oamaru Penguins

We got up at 4:30 in the morning to drive up to Oamaru and see penguins because you have to go in when they’re sleeping because they only come out of the water before and after they sleep. The sun rose at like 6:45. We heard them they were so loud and we saw them scramble around and back into the water. They were all sleeping in different places so we sat on these rocks and you could hear them all around you and they came out. There was a huge bunch of them in the bush next to us. It was cool.

 4. Speights Tour cheery and fun!

We did the Speights tour in Dunedin and it was great. Our guide was cheerful and we got 25 minutes of free beer at the end. We also got to taste malt ice cream. The good buzz was worth it.

 3. Cadbury Tour disappointing

Five pieces of chocolate and a lackluster guide was not worth the $20 for the Cadbury tour in Dunedin.

The Moeraki Boulders are my number one thing on the South Island. They’re cool, and it’s a really nice beach.

Dunedin was awesome. We stayed on the Otago peninsula which was awesome because we saw penguins and sea lions. We stayed at a farmers backpackers and it broke up our drive to Christchurch.
