This is a spectacular place shrouded in history and Maori
legend. Mt Tarwera is the sacred mountain of the local Tribe
Ngati Rangitihi, resting within the traditional boundaries of
the Te Arawa people. GOOT Passport holders get 15%
OFF their half day guided Volcano Tour which is a 4.5
hour tour that picks you up from Rotorua and drops you back!
The volcanic cone of Mt Tarawera has a violent past having
erupted five times (the most recent eruption was in 1886). Because
of it's history Tarawera is off limits to independent visitors
and the only way to access the mountain is with a guide. Mt
Tarawera Volcanic Tours offer awesome trips up Tarawera. Typically
these involve taking a 4WD bus up the crazy road to near the
summit. You then exit the bus and walk around and down into
the impressive crater. The views are truly breathtaking but
the highlight for many is the scree slope run down into the
crater. Fun! The friendly informative guides will keep you entertained
with Maori legends, local stories and information about the
local flora and fauna.
You won't forget this place.

Readers have left 3 comments. 3. Tarawera awesome guide! Allison Young (UNC Chapel Hill), Unregistered The volcano hike was really awesome. Loved the guide. He was really funny, but it wasn’t corny tourist funny, it was genuine kiwi funny. He was in tune with the younger crowd, as opposed to lame tourist jokes. He was interested in us learning something not just making us laugh. Blend of exercise and sights and something new. It was really cold but it didn’t really matter. 2. True New Zealand Ashley Read (BU), Unregistered Now this was the true New Zealand. I felt as though I was on the top of the bottom of the world. Everything opened up. With the best weather (but cold and windy), the best tour guide, and an amazing panoramic view, I can say that this was by far the most unexpected experience. Not only did we climb a volcano, we entered a place where no one is allowed to go anymore. The true New Zealand adventure. I also felt like I was in LOTR with the walking stick and climbing the crater of the mountain. It was a movie within itself. 1. Skiing on red sand Michele Romano (BU), Unregistered This was really cool. The ride up the mountain is very relaxing and there are awesome views. The hike itself was unlike anything I've ever done. The hike itself isn't too difficult and the views from the summit are amazing. The crater was sweet too. It was like skiing on red sand to get to the bottom. Our guide, Terry, was really cool too.
